Do you have an iPhone or iPod Touch? If so, do you have Doodle Jump [App Store Link]? Answering “No” to either of those questions requires a serious reconsideration of the priorities in your life–both are that amazing.
What is Doodle Jump? It’s completely simple. Completely frustrating. Completely addicting. And completely ridiculously amazing. It’s as close to an ‘absolutely must buy no matter what’ game that there is on the App Store.
You play as the Doodler (or as a Pygmy from Pocket God if you are so inclined) and have to get as high as you can by jumping on various platforms, avoiding (or shooting!) various obstacles, and by using various powerups along the way. That’s pretty much it. And it’s awesome.
The hand-drawn style graphics are cute and done very well. The accelerometer control is absolutely dead-on perfect. The sounds are quirky and fun. The gameplay is completely smooth on an iPhone 3G S, however there is what appears to be some network access induced stuttering that I detected on a 3G I tested on–not a huge deal, but if you’re going for a new record it could be somewhat harrowing if that happens at precisely the wrong moment (my best guess is that it’s pulling data from the network to show markers for the heights other Doodle Jump players have reached as you fly past them–the obvious solution is that if you’re on a 3G, simply disable global high scores in the game options).
Doodle Jump costs just $0.99 and is without a doubt one of the best gaming values on the App Store and is a shining example of the kind of fun, quick, stylish, and addictive games that make the iPhone/iPod Touch such a great gaming platform. Doodle Jump is unbeatable and offers pretty much infinite replayability. Get bored of playing it? In a few minutes to a few hours later, you’ll be wanting to play again to try to beat your high score. The developer, Lima Sky, has also been outstanding in keeping Doodle Jump continuously updated.
Propeller hats, jet packs, and protective shields are all new additions, in addition to drag-able platforms, exploding platforms, and vertically moving platforms (and let’s not forget the new ability to use aliens as platforms by jumping on them Mario-style instead of shooting them). If it’s even possible to get bored of the game, Lima Sky simply releases an update and makes it even more awesome seemingly every month. There’s also a global leaderboard, Twitter integration for tweeting your most impressive scores, amd Facebook integration, all the more to brag about your high scores and to challenge your friends.
Seriously, this is just an awesomely delightful game and should be on pretty much every single iPhone and iPod Touch out there. Period. Why are you still reading this? Buy Doodle Jump now. There is no need to think about it. If you don’t like it, then I really don’t know what to say to you–you probably just hate fun!
Panappticon Verdict: 100/100 — Simple, addictive, frustrating (in a good way), continuously updated, and an absolute blast for a few minutes or a few hours at a time. If you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, you simply must own Doodle Jump.
