Soosiz [App Store Link] is pure magic and if you have even a slight inkling to play a platformer you’re doing yourself a great disservice by not owning it. That’s pretty tall praise, but from the moment you start playing Soosiz you’ll understand why it deserves that praise.
Think Mario–not the silly spinoffs Nintendo made with Mario playing soccer or in the Olympics, or even in 3D. I’m talking about real platforming like the first few Mario games. Now, combine that with extremely creative use of gravity and wonderfully precise and simple controls, cute graphics, and a pretty decent soundtrack and you have Soosiz.
If aspiring developers want to know what it takes to even have a shot at success on the App Store with its current 100k+ App count, they should pay careful attention to what TouchFoo has done here. Sure, Soosiz borrows (sometimes quite heavily) from some Mario games (the 2nd world being a Mushroom world, etc etc), however they have executed almost flawlessly in creating a genuinely fun and creative game. They took the platforming elements and added an insanely fun touch–the use of gravity that makes navigating levels almost dizzying at times, and always fun (frustrating too, but in a good way!). The controls as well are truly amazing–pixel perfect and responsive, there’s never a moment where you wish you had finer control over your character.
I could go on and on about Soosiz’s gameplay, but truly the best way to get a good grasp of the game and to see how truly magical it is is by watching the gameplay video TouchFoo has created-
Seriously, this game is just pure magic. It is by far the best platformer available on the App Store (if you know of a better one please let me know in the comments as I’d love to see one even better than Soosiz!) and is a delight to play.
This review isn’t going to be needlessly long and wordy (yes yes I know my reviews are often needlessly long and wordy, sorry!)–just watch the gameplay video above because if that doesn’t get you excited about the game I don’t know what else will. Maybe the virtually universal praise it has received from professional reviewers and iTunes reviewers alike (a perfect 5/5 stars with over 200 ratings)? This is truly one of the shining stars on the App Store and is yet another example of why the iPhone and iPod Touch are such amazing gaming platforms now. Soosiz simply needs to be on your iPhone unless you absolutely cannot stand to ever play one second of a platformer for some reason, and even then you really owe it to yourself to play this game.
Is this review overly positive, bordering on seeming like a press release from TouchFoo itself? Well, that is simply what happens when a developer makes an absolutely amazing game that knocks it out of the ballpark each and every way it possibly can. Amazingly fun and unique gameplay? Check. Amazingly polished graphics (there really is no need for pixelated 3D nonsense here, just clean and adorable, thanks)? Check. A great soundtrack (this is probably the only area I suppose you could maybe improve on, but it’s definitely not holding the game back in any way at all)? Check. Perfect controls? Check. Seriously, what more could you ask for in a game? I honestly don’t know. But I do know this–to own an iPhone or iPod Touch and to not have Soosiz and to not play Soosiz would be a travesty. So get it now and thank me (and TouchFoo) later.
Panappticon Verdict: 100/100 — A must-own gravity defying platformer that’s easily one of the very best of its kind and among the very best games on the App Store. Perfect controls coupled with amazingly fun gameplay and whimsically cute graphics combine to make a truly magic gaming experience.
