Dan Deadman vs. Hangman [App Store Link] is a pretty simple classic Hangman game with a twist–instead of being drawn in a simple doodle-style (like so many games are nowadays), it instead features cartoon-style visuals that bring to life the precariousness of the soon-to-be-executed’s (maybe!) situation like never before.
The bottom line is it’s a hangman game with cartoon-style execution scenarios and while it’s well executed overall, I’m not sure it would be a game that would entice anyone not already interested in a hangman-style game to play it. Similar to a game like Battleship, you either want to play it or you don’t. If you do, you should check out Dan Deadman vs. Hangman because it adds enough to keep hangman as entertaining as it can be while you play.
Overall the graphics are great, the interface is definitely usable and clean, and the sounds are sparse but well done. If I had to complain about something I guess it would be that you don’t really know how many tries you have left until after you’ve played a couple games to figure out the order of the animations (this is a classic case of causing confusion to a player by changing the way things have always been done–somewhat akin to changing a Shopping Cart on an e-commerce site to something like a Log Raft of Goods or something equally zany). It’s not a huge deal after you play a bit, but keep it in mind the first couple times you play it.
There are currently two ‘execution scenarios’ to select from, and it would be nice if they followed Pocket God’s lead with updated content and perhaps added an extra scenario once every couple of weeks or once a month to keep it fresh–after all, this is just hangman so it would be a pretty tough sell if it didn’t have something like that. Beyond that there are various options for categories of words, the ability to select different languages, and a two player mode.
In the end, Dan Deadman vs. Hangman is a smartly put together hangman game with a visual twist to keep you entertained. Is it going to make you love hangman if you don’t? Not really. If you are looking for a hangman game though, it’s definitely worth a look.
Panappticon Verdict: 84/100 — Hangman with a visual twist and great graphics. It won’t make you fall in love with the game of hangman, but it’s definitely a worthy contender if you do want a hangman game.
