Another day, another word game review on Panappticon (what a surprise!). Whirly Word [App Store Link] is basically a 6 letter anagram game, where you construct 3-6 letter words out of the 6 letters presented to you on a circle. You can select to ‘whirl’ (hence the name of the game) the circle with the letters on it, which simply re-arranges the placement of letters on the circle. What that does, however, is pretty interesting (to me anyway)–words that I simply couldn’t see before suddenly appeared after whirling the board. Each word you spell correctly adds to a progress bar, [...]
This review is going to be short and sweet: Buy Orbital. Just do it, and do it sooner than later, because it’s currently on sale for $0.99 instead of $2.99 (at the time of this review anyway–check out our Sales page to see if it’s currently on sale), but it’s easily worth way more than that for the amount of enjoyment you’ll get out of it. What is Orbital? I admit, the first couple of times I started the game up and played it I thought it was boring, mainly because I didn’t read the instructions. Basically, there is a [...]
Soosiz [App Store Link] is pure magic and if you have even a slight inkling to play a platformer you’re doing yourself a great disservice by not owning it. That’s pretty tall praise, but from the moment you start playing Soosiz you’ll understand why it deserves that praise. Think Mario–not the silly spinoffs Nintendo made with Mario playing soccer or in the Olympics, or even in 3D. I’m talking about real platforming like the first few Mario games. Now, combine that with extremely creative use of gravity and wonderfully precise and simple controls, cute graphics, and a pretty decent soundtrack [...]
It is a widely known fact that there are exactly 9,510,612,925,653 Tower Defense games on the App Store. A lot of them are the same basic game but with a different theme and some small twist here and there. Now though, there is a 9,510,612,925,654th Tower Defense game that’s actually worthy of being on your iPhone or iPod Touch–Bloons Tower Defense. What exactly is Bloons Tower Defense you ask? In a nutshell it’s Bloons meets Tower Defense, and it is awesome. Ok, so you already have 35 Tower Defense games on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Do you really need [...]
What do you get when you cross Scrabble, Bookworm, and Aztec style? The answer would be WordWeaver [App Store Link]. The basic premise is to drag your finger to create words from the letters on the board, the longer the word is the more points you get–really similar to Bookworm. There are of course bonuses for using special bonus letters that add time to the clock and multiply your points for that word, in addition to the fact that letters have varying point values based on their ease or difficulty of being used (similar to Scrabble). What’s neat though, is [...]
So a promo code arrived for Guacamole [App Store Link] from its developer last week and I took a quick look at it and kind of facepalmed. WTF is this? I kind of felt bad for redeeming the promo code. I kind of felt bad for the developer for making this game. Seriously, wtf? But then I played it and it was surprisingly….weird and yet…kind of enjoyable. Guacamole is simply a whack-a-mole game but instead of whacking moles you have to whack ingredients for Guacamole (avocados, garlic, and sour creme–where the rest of the ingredients went, and why sour creme [...]
I’m going to be completely honest here: I stumbled across Guess the News [App Store Link] and really did not have very high expectations for it. I’m not a really a huge word game addict and I thought: oh great, yet another word game on the App Store. I already reviewed Word Ace the other day and wasn’t particularly looking forward to reviewing Guess the News. Reluctantly I bought it and….woah. This is actually fun and very addicting. 30 minutes after I started the game only expecting to play it for 2 or 3 minutes I realized that Guess the [...]
Do you have an iPhone or iPod Touch? If so, do you have Doodle Jump [App Store Link]? Answering “No” to either of those questions requires a serious reconsideration of the priorities in your life–both are that amazing. What is Doodle Jump? It’s completely simple. Completely frustrating. Completely addicting. And completely ridiculously amazing. It’s as close to an ‘absolutely must buy no matter what’ game that there is on the App Store. You play as the Doodler (or as a Pygmy from Pocket God if you are so inclined) and have to get as high as you can by jumping [...]
Let me save you some time: If you like Texas Hold ‘Em poker and you like Scrabble, just go download Word Ace [App Store Link]. There. You don’t even have to bother reading the rest of this review. For everyone else, Word Ace is probably worth a download anyway. Why? It’s free. You can play it online with your friends or strangers. And most importantly–it’s amazingly fun. Self Aware Games, developer of Taxiball [App Store Link], recently contacted me with a promo code for Word Ace Pro [App Store Link], the $0.99 version of the free Word Ace. Up until [...]
geoDefense was (and still is) one of, if not the best Tower Defense game available on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The gameplay, the graphics, the sounds–everything about it was awesome. I’ve played a ton of Tower Defense games from Warcraft 3 custom maps to Defense Grid and several for the iPhone as well and nothing got me hooked quite as much as geoDefense. But now there’s an even better Tower Defense game out, and it’s the sequel to geoDefense, called geoDefense Swarm. Usually sequels are at best equivalent to, but unfortunately worse than the original. Then there are the [...]
